Can you bolt on a turbo kit for the x16xe or do all the internals need uprating? cheers

Could run a low boost setup with a thicker head gasket.

Yeah, or you can buy steel plates.

Would it be be unreliable and how much power would it gain from standard roughly?

You'd need to put an inlet on it or you'd just be pissing in the wind.

I would say around 140 - 150bhp running low boost. It still would be reliable then.

The problem with using "decompression plates" or "thicker head gaskets" is they put a lot of added strain on the cambelt, pulleys, crank etc. When the engine was designed it was designed around the dimensions from the crank to cam pulleys when built up in standard form. Adding a few extra mm's between the head and block to lower the compression would have to be compromised with a custom cambelt of some sort.

Another way to go about it is to source some low compression pistons. this way you are not faffing with silly compression plates

Low comp pistons are the best bet, they can be picked up at a fair price too and will be stronger than the standard pistons so no fear of them cracking.

Steel rods would be ideal too though.

seems abit pointless doing that. might aswell just get the x16xe crown machined down 1-2mm. vxr pistons are just cast anyway

VXR Rod/piston vs X16XE



VXR rods fit the standard crank fine and have a bit more meat on them so should be stronger.
