I need to start cycling again because Im a fat bastard, but Ive got a shoe string budget. I want a bike with thin tyres so I can get the most speed possible, I struggled to get above 20mph on my mountain bike with its massive tyres.
Be used mainly at the weekend, might bike the 7 miles to work and back once a week when its nice...
Whats the cheapest possible I can go really? I dont mind shelling out a few extra quid for a more comfy saddle or something.
edit - also do I want discs or pads? On my mountain bike that I used to use to go to uni (6 miles a day) I was replacing brake pads (non disc brake bike) roughly once every 2 weeks and the brakes squeaked like fuck, it ended up costing me more to maintain than my car...

Stiffen up the suspension on your mtb and get some slicker tyres for your rims pal  that should make it abit better on road And i dont really know about the brakes but it would probly be worth getting some decent pads for your v brakes as they should last longer then cheapo ones.

IMO I would never go back to rim brakes now that I've got discs, only bike I've got with rim brakes is my road bike, and for discs they have loads more power over rims brakes and you have the same braking power in the wet too. If your looking for some disc brakes I'm selling some calipers and levers, all you'll need to get is a pair of discs providig you wheels can have discs on them.

Depending on how heavy you are on the brakes and type of riding you do will determine how long the pads last, also you can get different compounds in them too. I just have a basic set in mine and I I've done well over 1500 miles on.

Personally i would never buy cable discs unless you have a set of avid's with avid leavers, they fell nasty otherwise. A well set up v-brake will have more power than a cable disc.
Hydraulic discs on the other hand are definatly worth it.
Depending on the wheels also, i would not go lower than a 1.50 tyre
If you are looking for a new bike, i would personally say try not to spend less than £300 as in my experience, this is where the crap build quality stops.

£300...no way I can afford to spend that sort of cash on it, I dont have anywhere to store it, I just need something dirt cheap for the spring/summer to get about on which I can either sell in winter or leave outside to rust to the floor.
Not me being awkward BTW, I've got a tiny shed full of tools and lawnmower and no rear access from the front of the property anyway, so it will just be left out front...

 fair enough! Get on ebay/gumtree and look for a 2nd hand one then, probably best. Or, as said, get some thinner tyres

My bike what i use for abit if everything was 700 
I dont use it as much as i used to now though, its just locked up in the shed
I also have a bike that i use just fOr dirt jumping

they did, with bar mounted gear shifters instead of brake lever ones cheap gear stuff. dont know much about bikes and stuff but everything cheaper generally was pretty crap from what i saw
