Morning Guys.

The missus has just given birth to a gorgeous little boy, as some of you may know.

We have alot of family around the world and things, so to get pictures easily to them, and as i have hosting already for my website etc.

Im thinking of putting a simple gallery online, where they can browse our pictures and download them. So we dont have to keep sending them via msn/email as it takes a lifetime.

Whats the best one to use? I have the choice of these via softcalous installer:

Gallery
LinPHA
Coppermine
TinyWebGallery
Piwigo
Pixelpost
ZenPhoto
phpAlbum
Shutter

Obviously, i want it to be as safe and secure as possible. Whats my best option?

Dan

Even better idea i think would be a login page, with no registration option.

Then it can just be a list of files. I can then upload .zip files to it, in date order.

Right,

Ive made a directory, made that password protected (so you get the windows type login box) Set a user and password.

Now when u visit the address, you are asked to sign in, then it shows you the directorys etc.

So if i now upload .zip files to the folders, they are only accessable by those who login in.

Is this a pretty safe method?

HTTP Basic Auth is nice and safe for what you're doing, no need for anything else. Presumably you've enabled directory listing too so you can see a list of all the files in there already?

Why not just setup a seperate facebook account? Upload all your pictures to that and add your family/friends or whatever?

Thats an option moka, but seeings i have a hosting account which is a million miles from maxing out data/bandwidth etc. I may as well use that.

That way i dont get pestered by people wanting to be my friend, and i know no1 else will be seeing them

Yup, it's very safe. Better than form based authentication if we're not getting too technical

I assume this is what i have done. I set it up via cpanel, i now have a htaccess folder in the root dir.

No, not a link from protectyourpiece.co.uk lol, bought a website name specifically for it, which family memeber will be able to remember easily.

Seems like a good way to get loads of pics to the rest of the family, to add to things like photo frames etc etc.

Probably an easier way to do it, but it seemed a good idea

Dropbox would have been another option if you hadn't already got a server.
