Just looking for some advice really my friend has just managed to secure a lock up unit that can hold around 5 cars in at whilst using it for his primary purpose.

He has been talking alot lately about doing a few things on the side and was looking at car breaking. He was saying that he only wants to go for certain cars that he knows general parts arent cheap.

I think he has been looking at cat C stuff as i know he doesnt want to fix them on and sell them he just wants to break them for parts and put the parts on ebay et etc.

I know scrap prices for cars arent great at the moment and i really dont think there is much to be made in it.

Just looking for some other points of view as he seems to think im putting him off the idea but im not to clued up on it!

On the contrary i think scrap price is quite good at the moment hence the gypsys stealing what they can.

I would have a look on ebay for the kind of cars intended to be broken to see if parts are actually selling.

Best way to do it would probably be to buy then take what you think will sell and scrap them otherwise you may end up whording them for ages like my dad

TBH there is lots of money to be made in buying a car with a fault and repairing it and putting it back up for sale, Although a lot of that is just pure luck of picking up the car cheap in the first place.

Breaking some cars can mean lots of money, others just aren't worth it, Deffo do your homework before spending money.

Cheers FRO i think that is what he wants to do just buy budget cars for under 2k and strip them down to the bare shell for anything that will sell!

Whats the score with cars going to scrap how does that all work as ive got no idea? Do you just make sure the car has tyres and then ring them up tell them you want it scrapping and they give you a price?

Best off if you can use a trailer, Remove wheels/tyres and then go to a weigh bridge and your get a price depending on weight.

Your need to get somebody to sign the logbooks so you can put them as scrapped, else your have to keep sorning them over and over.

most money to be made is in common cars on the road really, its all supply and demand crap, toyota would be good there are millions of toyota taxi's etc, no point breaking something that you dont see many of as nobody will want or need the parts,

search forums such as this and look for parts that break down often, bits that people always ask for, probs be the steps that i would take to start

So maybe look at commons cars such as corsa clio fiesta focus etc?

I think my mate was looking at it the other way really like bmw etc for cars where parts are known to cost a fortune

if the parts are going to cost a fortune, its more likely people will go through the insurance for repairs, obv by that i mean body panels etc, for parts, most arn'y that expensive new from ebay or the likes, engines may sell things like that, but on the other hand you maybe stumped with pars for years and make no money on them, more common cars would be my road

Scrap is good.

I don't do it for profit but I've also got many free parts. Also depends how patient you are and how much storage you have. You may sometimes not have a buyer for stuff for a while and a stripped car takes up far more room than one that is in one piece. That room for 5 may only equate to 2 or 3 if they're in bits.

breaking high spec cars is best option imho. people always want to retrofit stuff.

Corsa c SRi, crash damaged, wont be more than 500 -800 surely? sell wheels, interior, engine, mirrors and what ever else is left....And it's small bits that add up.

I would imagine things like working sensors etc would make a fair wedge on second hand, plus the storage cost is pretty much minimal?

Don't underestimate the time and hassle.

It's not always as easy as things coming off the car fully working and not damaged and selling straight away for the right price.

Plus it all needs packing up etc.

I own/run a specialist VW breakers, our aim is to offer a better service than just a regular scrapyard, therefore we aim to clean and list all our parts by part number and send out the same day.

We turnover 3-4 cars a month and its a lot of work stripping them down, cleaning, labelling and storing the parts, as well as listing them correctly online.

Theres definatly money to be made, thats for sure, but as Ian says dont underestimate the time and effort, breaking upto 5 cars isnt like clearing out your garage.

As for common or specialist cars, its six of one, half a dozen of the other, for example if a car is common, more people want the parts, but there is normally more people selling the parts as well..

One other thing, you'll be left with a lot of stuff to get rid of, ie. oils, stuff you can't sell but isn't scrappable. Need to plan for that as well.
