hi all,
i have a gsi with the ecotec engine in it.
my problem is that it uses about a litre of oil a week, i have heard these engines use oil but this worrys me slightly. there is no smoke on startup and some whitish smoke comes out when i boot it, but i think that is just fuel.
is this normal for these engines?

is there any oil leaking? a litre a week is ALOT! and if it was going into the cylinders you'd be getting clouds of smoke

nah its not leaking out anywhere, and theres no smoke, altho i looked at the level today and it hasnt moved from monday so maybe it was some crap thin oil

could be head gasket going into the cylinder or it could be mixing with coolant

nah cant be either of them, coolant compleatly fine, done a head gasket test test and its fine. and its not smoking

vauxhall reckoned they used .5litres every 1000 miles:S is there any smoke on over run just your not seeing it? and white smoke is water, blue is oil and blacks fuel so you know

You say in a week, but how many miles do you cover in a week? Do you do loads of short journeys where it's almost always running from cold, or longer journeys so the engine is normally warm?

If theres no blue smoke then it must be leaking fron somewhere mate. Give it a good checking over. And/or maybe try a thicker or better oil if your using thin and cheap stuff

Really appreciate the replys here, Yeh I have had it on a ramp and cannot see it leaking anywhere. There's abit of white smoke when I boot it and I have had my friends following me and looking for it smoking but they cannot see any ? I got my friend to rev it up and I checked the exhaust and some smoke came out but it was black, and not a lot really. I guess the white smoke must be condensation in the exhaust when its cold

You're right about x16xe's using oil. Shitty things!
What grade oil are you using in it mate? As said a litre a week is a lot for the mileage your doing if its not leaking anywhere.

i think i have got to the bottom of it, it must have been some crappy thin oil, as since monday it has used none
