i don't get why people would want to pay tax and then not insure a car.

unless you plan to drive illegally, you are just wasting money on tax

With regards to track cars e.t.c. that are permanently off the road - why not fill in the section saying that the cars scrapped or exported to take it off the register, if you've no intention of using the car on the road again.

how? if theyre driving without insurance they'll just drive without tax as well. all this will do is make things more difficult for genuine motorists and enthusiasts

They might still drive for a bit, but after a while I think they will get pissed off with the constant fines and police attention don't you think?

I wondered this.

A friend of mine has half a dozen cars at any one time just sat on his drive but his insurance policy states that he is insured on any car thats either his or left in his care.

I think for this to work the tax system needs a serious shake up/modernisation

Isn't there a section on the V5 that you fill in when you sell the car to a trader in order to prevent the trader from coming up as a previous owner. Cars logged in that way would surely be exempt?

If they drive with no insurance, they could just sorn the car and drive with no insurance or tax and get no fines through. It will make no difference.

SORN and tax should both be able to be done online.

It's not a massive hassle but it's also not a great use of time for someone who is legal and honest. It's also very easy to overlook and be fined, despite just liking cars.

Yep, its easy to re tax a car. But then you've got the piss take that is tax only counts from the 1st of the month....

This is where they need to change the Tax system, instead of it being 6 or 12 months is should be daily. then you could Tax it for say PVS weekend, insure it for 3 days then tuck the car back into the Garage afterwards.

Would be betyter to tax you on milage.

Fairest way really. The more you use the roads, the more you pay. Simple. Would be hard to enforce though

This doesn't count if it's registered in a traders name

I think its a great idea.. Its not hard to sorn if its laid up as a project.. and if its a weekend toy it should be taxed and insured anyway.. It will on the other hand stop little knobs buying a car with tax and driving it uninsured.

What a bout a weekend toy that you plan to use a company for short term insurance or day insure etc.

Also how often will they review it, I'm guessing at every reminder period then it will get checked so providing you car is insured 6 or so weeks before the end of the tax period you should be able to dodge it

yes, i wonder how it will affect the companies that offer short term car insurance, from a week to 21days.

surely there will be no market for them
