Some data logs from VBOX.

Time Attack round 2. Bo Neilsens best lap in the final vs my best lap in the final.

Bo seems to take McIntyres much quicker than I do, and has a small advantage at the top end. 114VMAX to my 110VMAX

Seems i'm quicker on the throttle and through higher speed corners whilst Bo is better at lower speed stuff and pulls past me when I'm into 5th Gear

Interesting stuff.

I was keeping an eye on yours and Bo's times during the day via Bo's FB page.

Both cars are very similar BHP wise aren't they?

Obv you've got 4WD as an advantage but I guess your car is heavier?

Do you have any brake traces at all or any other inputs to look at? Can't really tell to much with that!

looks like you could do with carrying more speed through the corner to me, especially the last bend.

Bo looks to hot into a fair few corners and slow out aswell! tut tut.

eh?

I'm faster in and out of most of the corners.... the hairpin (last corner) is a slow 35'ish mph corner.... Me being a bit slower prob alows me to get on more power earlier compared to bo's feather throttle.

Butchers - between 15-20secs into the lap - I have a slow speed there as I was bouncing off the limiter in 3rd

McIntyres - between 10-15secs in - Bo gets round there quicker than I do.... I hate the corner!

Bo from what im seeing is on the throttle earlier on both traces. You need to weigh up the time difference from braking zone to end of straight to see who's gained the most, traces can be decieving.

What i mean is, your traces are more of a V i.e stop the car, point and go rather than carrying the speed through the corner.

Post up a brake and throttle overlay

I'm used to looking at shiz like this, you'd gain masses of time by wiring in a proper data logging system!

a point V trace is much better.... you dont want to spend time off the gas or brake to be honest!

My trace (on the speed v distance plot) shows me (on some corners) accelerating earlier, i.e the trace picks up further to the left (less distance so earlier)

You plot is useless without ans scales!

The Astra, new shape Impreza and Leon were the only cars getting a good turn in to MacIntyres.

Every other TA car was scrubbing badly with understeer. (Which some cured with big licks of throttle to force in to oversteer and a touch of rallycross )

.... er.....

Bo has greater power to weight (faster on the straights) but my lap time is a 59 to his 60.

Impreza can still doing something right

Bo's car does handle very well though, esp on turn in to slow speed corners. I have an idea or two on how to improve my turn in but it would prob unsettle my car on the higher speed corners where I'm quicker.

I had the diff settings giving a slight diff lock/more torque to the front which gives the car more of a 4x4 grip, but gives a fair amount of 'push' - understeer on the front. The stability is good on corner exits/mid corner on power though. I shifted the DCCD as the tyres werent as grippy in the cold and at times damp conditions In short the car turns in a hell of a lot better with the DCCD at open.

Those three all run flat undertrays on the front with splitters and chassis mountings so downforce is transferred rather than relying on the bumper mounts.

There seems to be a massive focus from everyone on fitting as big a rear wing as possible and tiddly little canards on the front to try and balance it up.

I reckon the Astra and Leon would have had too much rear grip for a slow speed circuit like KH and would have benefitted from losing a bit there so the rear end would move around more in to the proportionately faster corners like Clarks and Duffus.

Not really sure what would work well with the 4WD cars, but the new shape Impreza certainly had the least noticeable tyre scream through the corners from understeer and didnt look to be scrubbing wide.

Yup - those 3 have full flat floor with 'ground effects' skirts

My splitter extends to about the rear of my front wheels - so rear of engine.

Short of the former Zen impreza I'd be amazed if any are running low enough to really benefit from ground effect skirts.

Johnny Millner's TSS car is ridiculously low to make use of it!
