How hard is it to replace the full rear beam and fuel tank?
Just had the car jacked up and noticed a canny size hole in the rear beam and that my fuel tank is wet so both are gonna need replacing but not sure if its something i could do or have my local garage do it.
Sorry for the poor pics of the hole in the beam but only had my 2 mega pix camera phone on me.
The hole is just over 2 inches long and a smaller hole is starting just along from it.

Beam is four bolts then the brake pipes and handbrake cable, both of which will be a pain in the ass.
Tank is a few bolts to open the straps. You'll need to exhaust out of the way. Pipework for this is also tied up very well. Do what you can under the back seat first.
Neither is particularly difficult in terms of skills but you'll need lots of time and room because there the potential for rounding stuff is very high under there.

Sounds like a right chow on 
I currently on tidying the underside and body work behind the bumpers and arches and would be a good opportunity to underseal under the fuel tank.

Its already had a plate welded on the side because of a rotten hole last year and not really sure if there would be enough solid metal for a plate to be welded there.
Would this be an M.O.T failure?

Not that close to the tank while it's on the car.
It's a ball ache particularly if the car isn't really high.
I would generally only do this if there were a few of us there for passing stuff. Hate getting under there and not having what I need

I wouldnt weld it as its all rotten.

You could do it yourself but you need to set aside a fair amount of time IMO

Fuel tank is easy enough - main problem is seized studs; I cut them through, drilled them out and replaced them with new marine grade (A4) stainless bolts

Its not a big job at all, the brakes are the hardest part. just soak everything in wd40 or similar for a few days before.
I'd do it if you were local.

That's the thing im surprised at as that's the only thing rotten on the car,the rest of the underside is solid.

Beams rotting out is quite common, They have little protection vs the rest of the car, and crap can sit inside it and rot it through.

If you're going to do it yourself get a 6 point socket set as the 12 point ones will round off every bolt under there.

I hear this all the time yet I very very rarely round off anything with decent 12 point sockets.

Never done a rear beam but a changed the tank on mine and found it easy! Reversed on some ramps then you have got loads of room I got my brand new tank from birtley auto panels also changed all the x2 filters while I was in there

get yourself a haynes manual and do it yourself chap.
beam isnt hard to fit but just take your time
Plenty of wd40 to hand will help

I have a haynes manual its just bleeding the brakes i dont fancy doing.
