Obvious thing is to have a go in both and see which you prefer.
If going for an A3 I'd be tempted by a Sportback, probably more choice of colours and spec and they look as good as the 3 door TBH.

The list price on a new A3 Sportback is £17.2k so surely you could knock them down a bit and get it closer to 15k if you play it right?

I do need to do this, went to BMW yesterday but they only had one salesman in and were really and after waiting 30 mins ended up walking out.

1 Series is a bit marmite it seems, I find they look much better proportioned in real life than on pictures.
For me its coming down to:
123d - Remaped 260bhp (08 Plate 40ish K miles) - £15k.
120d - Remaped 200bhp (08 Plate 30ish K miles) - £14k
Audi A3 S Line- Remaped 200bhp (08 Plate 40ish K miles) - £14k
Bimmer looks wise by far.

I got those prices off the Audi website. Go on the configurator, select Audi A3 Sportback, Standard trim then come back and apologise to me when you realise that you can't get an A3 with a 1.4TFSI, 1.6 TDI or 2.0 TDI for £17,200

That is the Sportback page and it says you only get the 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 engines  How come it then allegedly changes when you go to build one? Someone (not necessarily Matty G) is making this up as they go along tbh.
I googled "A3 Sportback" and it took me to that page
