I think they did a later Vitara Diesel but it won't be £500. Fourtrak also very good.
Ssangyong musso Came with a Merc diesel.

suzuki sj's are awesome off road(if thats the plan, go for the SJ413)
Fucking horrible to drive on the road though, I would go for the fourtrak as you will get PAS and leccy windows

Get a SJ with a hard top, they will go throught the smallist of gaps, and are great off road. They look shit, but you'll amazed at the hills they go up, and being mega light great on any surface.

that rules out the suzuki sj then
Stretch your budget to just under 1k and get a 300TDI Discovery like redtom said.
a disco for £500 will require lots of welding

Also what about a Subaru Justy?

You could get a few hundred off, and very car like.

Discovery will be fucked for £500 unless your extremely lucky, vitara wouldn't be too bad, SJs are the worst thing to drive on the road I have ever driven.
2.8 frontera would be my choice, or a pajero but a £500 frontera will be a lot better than a pajero, but some pajeros have a electric locking rear diff.

Nope, its a mercedes engine but made by ssangyong, they arent great engines.
A factory diesel vitara will be at least £1500
