Must have damaged something else while you were under the bonnet.

What engine is it?

Don't the 1.2 8V's have some sort of breather pipe attached to the side of it?

You don't usually take pipes off the airbox other than the cold air feed one that leads to the slam panel?

From what I remember you either unclip / cut off the big box bit that sits in the wing and drill a few holes.

De-restricting will not make your car smell of fuel. Go have a good look about and see if you can find anything

Cant remember if the charcoal canister is that side or not? may have knocked the pipe out accidentally.

Had the airbox on my old 12v drilled and derestricted with no cold air feed and didn't have any problems at all.

could be running rich, but only your wallet would be able to tell that, not your nose. I would go with you knocking something i.e. charcol cannister or you have done something else possible coincidently

mine smells of petrol aswell but i have literally dimolished my airbox by cutting the bit off next to the wing but i have also de-catted it so it is overfueling and i have a powerbox on mine so im not that fussed with mine
