I'm on the register. Did it when giving blood.
Why what do you want to know? It's no big deal nowadays. You get given some drugs for a few days then they take blood from one arm extract the bone marrow lovleyness they need and stick the blood back in the other arm. No pain or drama.
Have a looksie on 'tinterweb....

Why would they take blood out one arm and put it back in the other

Because they take the cells out they need and put whats left back in.
In the good old days you'd get a fuck off big needle into your pelvis to get bone marrow cells. Much pain and discomfort. Now with the advancement of mediical procedures they don't. They more or less do what I said in my previous post innit...

I've got a rare condition (CGD) and need a bone marrow transplant at some point in my life...
Declined two so far, as It was the wrong timing. You have to have isolation for up to 6 months. My brother is a match, wouldn't have declined otherwise.
It's supposed to be quite painful for the donor, and boring for the one who has it.

I think it used to be or it's just a myth. It's supposed to be just a bit uncomfortable as you sit around for 4-5 hours with needles in your arm.
Went to a thing last night as they are trying to get more 18-30 yr olds on the register and just thinking about doing it.

As far as I'm aware, yep they do this now for stem cell donation. Im sure they do still do bone marrow donations involving sticking a very large needle into someone's hip bone as well though, although not as commonly?Not sure if thats done under local or general anesthetic? Either way is painful. I've seen a bone marrow biopsy done and they used what I can only describe as a small Apple corer looking thing and the patient was in a lot if pain. Not trying to put you off or anything, its a totally worthwhile thing to do, definitely.

There are two ways of donating stem cells, there is the out one arm and back in the other arm.
The other way is under anesthetic (i don't know the difference between local and general, but you have to stay in over night) and i think it's an injection into your pelvic bone which is a donation of bone marrow itself.
I think that is right

It's okay I was almost going to donate but a better match was found. But I must of been misinformed by the Doctors and nurses and othe medical experts!!
I feel a right prat as CS knows the real story with these things! How stooopid do I feel now
I really need to get my act together and get the right info off the right people..
