What's the best? I built my dad's website using VevoCart, literally the only reason I chose it was because it was one of the only .Net based packages and I know .Net very well. Basically it's pretty rubbish, it randomly errors and it doesn't have the flexibility that my dad's website needed. Plus you have to pay for it, which means the support is limited to the original developers and they aren't very helpful at all.

So I'm extending my search to PHP based packages. Zen Cart is leading the way at the moment. Can anyone recommend anything else?

Thanks,
James

I used to use Oscommerce / Zencart for clients, I now only use Magento, unless they're needing something completely bespoke.

Magento is far superior to Zen Cart nowadays James.

I used Cubecart and found it quite easy.
The only reason I didnt use Magento was due to my hosts restrictions on php safe mode and the php software version.

OS commerce is ok, but very dated imo.

Deffo Magento or Cubecart imo

Interesting, it look promising based on the Magento website. How easy is it to apply a HTML skin to it?

I'm not sure how easy it is to apply a skin to from scratch, there's Alot of files involved. If you find a skin online you like, it takes about 30 seconds to install and be using it.

The thing is that he already has a live website, and I know he will want it to look identical. I was reading through the Magento designers guide last night and it doesn't sound too bad once you get your head round the structure of the design packages/themes etc.

I've got a really good contact who deals with magento and knows it inside out if you ever wanted to get someone to build it for you.

I don't know anything about coding etc but managed to google everything I wanted to change and did it with ease. So someone with a bit of knowledge will probably find it simple to build there own skin.

Worst thing I found is if you don't do things exactly as magento say then when the updates come out every few months, it all goes tits up fast

I work as a developer so I should be ok with the coding side (even though I haven't done PHP for ~5 years), I just don't want it to take too long as I'm doing it for free.

I set up a local Magento instance last night, I'll have a play to see how quickly I can get it looking how I want.

Thanks everyone!

I've never found Magento very efficient to custom skin

I've heard good things about Shoppe though I've never used it!
