curently i watch films etc that are on my laptop on my xbox over my wireless network.
im going to uni next week though so dont think im allowed to set up a network in halls, so i was thinking of getting a portable 1TB hdd and putting all my films on there .
i know the option is there on the xbox menu to play from external device but will it be as simple as drag and drop the files, plug the drive into the xbox and play them straight off or will there be some kind of fucking about?

very easy to set up your own LAN or WLAN inside the network

yeah but from my experience youre not allowed to set up a network in your room, its usually against the terms of your contract

Why would anything be different Only difference is you will have to set your xbox to connect to your laptop rather than router, then use a cabled connection for the uni network. Simple.

if i had my laptop plugged into the xbox directly then i wouldnt be able to go on the internet at the same time, which i like to do while im watching tv

Right so you have a wireless network between your laptop and xbox ?
You won't need to change anything then. Not as if you have a router etc set up.

So are you using a router at home ?
I'm saying set your laptop and xbox to connect each other without the use of a router. Then use the ethernet for internet on your laptop.

If you don't want to set it up I just found this that you could use
http://connectify.me/features/
Never tried it so don't know if its any good.
Just create your own ad hoc network via wifi, its simple to do. Connect you xbox to that. ethernet to the campus network. done.

Just create an AD HOC network without the use of Connectify. Its really straight forward. A few links -

You may need to fiddle with the Xbox to get it to see the movies, probably need to specify the IP address and exact share name of the movies folder.
