From what I've read it should be the opposite, something to do with the pressure?

Lets not all go practicing drown-proofing in the water please. People die from shallow-blackouts every year doing this shit

My mate apparently tried to hold his breath as long as his TMNT toy could, in the bath. He ended up passing out

Just tried it 1.56. A lot better than I thought id do. Easier if to breath out a little every twenty seconds or so, stops your lungs feeling liked there going to burst lol.

Me and a few mates thought it would be a good idea to jump into a river in april, (we had only just got rid of snow a month before) as soon as each of us dived in it was so cold it made you gasp for air, I had no chance of holding my breath.

We only jumped in once

Do some deep breathing exercises before it and you'll be fine. I just managed over 70 seconds after taking a few deep breaths. You need to stretch your lungs so you can fit more air in.

Honestly don't panic about the BOSIET course, you're under no more than 15-20 seconds if you're quick enough.

You should be more concerned about using the re-breather, it takes a bit of getting used to.

yup - you cant fail the BOISET course unless you are a complete mongo.

I just did the T-BOISET (tropical eh!) out here in Brunei and I think I would have learnt more passed out drunk. What a waste of time.

Got to swing on a rope a couple of times though

Oil & Gas courses - money for old rope! Good if you own a company running these courses. Good if you are getting paid to do these courses. Bad if you have to pay out of your own money.

Around a minute in normal conditions. If I was pressured with a gun pointed at my head.. probably around 5.

The longest time to hold your breath underwater is 18 min 32.59 sec and was achieved by Karoline Mariechen Meyer (Brazil) at the Racer Academy swimming pool, Florianopolis, Brazil, on 10 July 2009.
