I'm looking to purchase/register a .com domain name, where would people recommend doing this?

Also, is it usually just a fairly small one off yearly fee?

Clearly I have no idea about this and need help to point me in the right direction.

Yup, you usually pay yearly although you can pay X number of years in advanced with most domain registrars. And if you're after a US TLD (top level domain) like a .Com (or .net etc) then you're better of going with a US registrar like NameCheap.com (one of the cheapest i've found), as they tend to be a little cheaper than a UK registrar ie: around $9 a year (£6) instead of £9/10.
Otherwise i use 123-reg.com (uk registrar) for everything else.

Edit - Didn't realise Vidahost were offering decent prices on (some) domains, good shout.
