I've got a pretty old Sony amp (hi-fi) and sometimes whenever I turn it on the right speaker connected to it doesn't have any sound to it unless I turn the volume way up and then back down to whatever level I want the sound at.
Problem occurs even with different speakers and speaker cable, so I'm thinking the problem is amp related.
Any ideas?

New one. Wouldn't bother trying to fix it is its old.
Unless it cost you a fortune etc

Volume pot could be shot or need cleaning.

It's probably about 15 years old at least, I imagine.
Are they easy to sort/pay for it to be sorted Ade?

It depends on the soldering and the type of pot used. I could be wrong and it might be something else.

Oh OK... I'd probably be spending about £200 or so on a new amp if I had to do that, but if a repair was much cheaper I'd go down that route TBH as there isn't anything wrong with it otherwise.
Just need to find somewhere to take it to

Blast a load of switch cleaner in there. Adio may be right, but at that age i'd have thought the pot would be fooked.
Maybe check for dry joints? Might be an easy fix if you can operate a soldering iron

Could be but usually the pot tends to degrade over time rather than work/not work which is what it appears to be doing.
I'd say it's a dry/cracked joint on the board or a dodgy connection somewhere. Open it up and have a nose as it could be an easy fix.

Is it going to be the same process/precautions as opening up a PSU (i.e. don't touch the big caps)?
