My cuz gave me his PS3 which had this problem, he was going to chuck it in the bin, I used to fix PS2's and fixed loads of xbox360's but never done anything to a PS3 other than changed HDD's.
Is it an easy repair? I'm going to download a repair guide if its worth it.

In the same situation (made a thread a few days ago) but i'm lucky enough to have access to a proper reflow machine. But a load of a people on a PS3 forum (can't remember which one, was one of the first few links after doing a Google) recommended this guide - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_Ic1_TY-GU, which looks to be pretty decent and heat-gun appears to be the best 'home' fix.
Alternatively I have read of people sticking the board in the oven and have had similar results.

I've got a good hot air gun as I use them at work a lot, i'll give it a go when I get a minute.

you can stick the whole thing in the oven and it can work. i think so anyway,i read it somewhere...

Apparently it's better to run liquid flux around the CPU and GPU before gunning it. Also heard the 'Copper Shim' fix and (/or) bending the heatsink brackets (two backets underneath the Bluray drive and PSU) help to apply more pressure to the CPU/GPU which 'apparently' help.
