They are illegal anyway because a halogen headlamp unit is not designed for a HID bulb, even without the other issues.

Aside from that (although I've done it myself) it's a complete pita when some clown in a 1997 car comes up behind you with blue xenons firing all over the shop.

Not always the case. The headlights on our mitsibishi come as Halogens in this country but HIDs in others. The main light unit is the same throughout the world its just the light/wiring (along with sef levelling stuff etc) thats different.

Fitting shrouds to the e36 makes the his beam the same as normal headlights.

I'm not saying that's 100% not the case but I doubt it.

Although it will look the same the reflector will be designed for a HID.

That was to Rob.

If you are fitting something to constrain the beam then I suppose that would come under 'designed for'.

Still a grey area me thinks. There is no hard proof on the net, only people on forums saying "my mates, dad's, brother's, sister's, husband" said so. The police, DVLA or VOSA have nothing on their website about them.

BUT, even though I have HID's fitted, I always get that strange feeling I could get pulled when I'm behind a police car with them on. I've never been stopped personally though

Definitely a grey area, I don't think anybody knows what is ok. The official word on it obviously isn't clear enough either.

I guess it will be a luck of the drawer. Some MOT testers are cunts. Others fine. I would hope if my lights dazzled others I would be declined an MOT. But on the flip side of my lights where fine then I would be pissed for failing an MOT due to the colour of the beam.

ffs they take 5 mins to remove, as long as you dont have 10000k hids no one should pull you over unless you are very unlucky

I take my MOT tester out for a steak and then we hit the discotheque for a boogie.

I end up making him breakfast the next day.

Ahem.

Road Traffic Act, 1988. S54 and the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989, for starters.

Basically - they have to be e-marked which 99.9% of kits won't be, or conform to the standards required of a type approved vehicle, which meanshaving headlamps designed for HIDS/self levelling/headlight washers.
