Has anyone here had any experience on GPS trackers, we have a few service vans we want to track, mainly to track distance and know where they are and who's closest to customer sites.
I would ideally like one that uses google maps and has some kind of API or can write the data to SQL DB or something?

Not easier to get a fleet management package like IsoTrak/Navman Wireless/Smart Witness/TrackItNow?

You can get a mobile running android for about £50.
Useless for this but just made me think how cheaply you could do loads of fancy stuff.

I dunno thats quite a good shout, could get it to report to that Google service (can't remember the name now!) every time it moves. But you'd need to mount it on the car in such a way that it boots up/charges every time the car is running.

Granted but for a company I'd want to implement a decent reliable proven package that has support if I should need it.

I would prefer to go with a package with someone then when it goes wrong I can blame someone else, Just id like to be able to do stuff with it, get it talking to our CRM so we can calculate lead times to customers etc...

Worth speaking to a few as you'll probably be able to get API access of sorts; certainly i believe Navman Wireless allow for integration with custom software.

I have no idea how much it costs, and tbh cost isnt a major factor if it does the job we require.

do you just want it to purely track them & know the locations of where they are overlaid onto google maps?

I used to use this http://www.aspicore.com/en/tuotteet_tracker.asp?tab=2&sub=1
It can do a UDP Tcp send of gps datagram, this in turn can be written to SQL database.
Then dump from SQL to KML overlay.
Other option is the use google latitude.
