Well ur goin 2hav 2think about what kinda power you want, 140-150. Is acheivable without changin pistons but strengthin the engine rod bolts etc.

ebay have rods and pistons for £700 but that would be all your budget gone, be a tough call to find pistons and rods cheaper than £500 tbf, a good rebuild with a few subtle mods will see 130-150 as daveybee says

I would keep standard pistons and rods
ARP Rod bolt kit
Get the crank balanced.
New gaskets all round.
Valve Items replaced
Re hone and rings
Decent set of cams is probably in that budget too.
4-2-1 manifold and Inlet.
All that done right would equate to around what davey mentioned power wise.
Flywheel lightened too.
Change the final drive in the gear box aswell to benefit from it being a revvy engine.

I got 179bhp out of a 1.6 but that was built for a lad with money,
Was rebored to 1.75cc with pocketed pistons
Dbilas inlet
Dbilas wild cams
Ported, polished, gas flowed head with larger ports.
AAS 4branch nd exhaust system,
Megasquirt management,
And other bits, stood the kid about 7k.
