Just a question for curiosity reasons really,

the puma short block is sold as a complete unit, you cant get individual parts, eg shells etc from ford and if your bottom end bearings go they advise you to buy a whole short block, obviously at a great cost.

The reason this is is because the ladder is temperamental and once disassembled its near impossible to set it back again to how it should be.

Question really is, if you change the bottom end shells before they show wear and knock, should it in theory be ok to just drop the sump off and replace them that way as i understand if they are worn and knocking you need to get the crank reground and shells matched, but if you do it before can you just stick new ones straight on in that fashion and hence avoid taking the bottom end to pieces

Probably better to ask on a ford puma forum or passion ford for advice?

Web I was at JAMSPORT we used to rebuild a few of these. Ford class it as disposable same as the 2ltr duratec but we used to do loads of those aswell.

Remove the sump and do bearings is fine as a precaution again did this when we used to fit arp rod bolts

ok, most places try to sell the ones for some mazda as they are the same size but apparently missing a notch casting which means nothing to stop them spinning round in the rod

Yeah the rods aren't notched on most modern engines To help speed up the assembly

Why are you fixing something that isn't broke?

Like Ian said in the track car thread, it's not worth doing a belt on the engine because they're so cheap.

If it isn't knocking leave it alone.

That's the point though if I replaced then now which would be a quick job and cheap then I wouldn't have to replace the engine in the longer term. Anyway it was really just a hypothetical question that was playing on my mind

I'd rather leave it well alone, taking stuff apart for the sake of it, is just asking for trouble.
