I'd say it was more of a squeeking sound,

it repeats consistantly with wheel rotation i.e. speed up it gets more frequent, slow down and it gets less frequent

the disc diddnt look central in the calliper and the rear of the carrier was close to the disc. although upon test drive it sounded like a rubber squeeking, sort of like a cv boot rubbing against something once every rotation of the shaft

I was going to suggest maybe one of the pads is not completely clearing the disc when the brakes are depressed.
But as you say it's a rubbery sqeak it probably isn't that.

Does the noise continue or stop when braking?

If you have no luck you can bob down to me in Manchester and i'll have a look.

Hi pal, I'm probably about 30-40 mins away depending on what part of Wigan you're in. Are you near the M61?
I wouldn't charge you to have a look mate. Are you free Wednesday? I'm off work and doing a few bits on a mates car that day.
