What the hell is causing this, it's doing my head in,

I have to use the onscreen keyboard to get any shift characters.

Shift lock turned on / off on your keyboard. Stupid sticky keys function iirc. Pres shift 5 times to turn it on / off I think? Or in the control panel > accessibility menu.
