Hi all,
Basically I have volunteered for an AK style funraising event.
Here is the spiel:
MINIMUM FUND-RAISING TARGET: £3,500
PROJECT LOCATION 1: St Lazarus School, Kibera Slums, KENYA:
This tiny school accepts 130 children who would not be accepted at any other facility due to their families' inability to fund even the most basic requirements for standard school entry: uniform and text books
Our aims are to:
1. Fund & Refurbish (particularly the roof) of several mud classrooms.
2. Launch another year's lunch programme for 130 primary school children. Huge leaps have been made in the basic health of the children as a direct result of previous Challenge group funding.
3. Subject to funds: Fund an entire year's running costs (teacher salaries, maintenance, food programme, books & materials) to give the school time to find additional and more reliable funding partners. The school is in danger of financial and physical collapse in every respect having had all other sources of funding fade away under the current economic climate. Teachers are currently not being paid and food is intermittent. For most of the children, this was their only meal of the day.
PROJECT LOCATION 2: MAKAT VILLAGE COMMUNITY (MAASAI), LAKE NATRON, LONGIDO DISTRICT, TANZANIA
A community surviving in one of the most remote areas of the Great Rift Valley. It is surrounded by water but unsafe to drink (fluoride levels 14% higher than the maximum levels recommended for safety by the WHO). Makat is at least a day's off-road drive from anywhere. The entire community has access to only one dilapidated land-rover (when it works) which belongs to the Headmaster. The local population suffer appalling and preventable bone deformities and teeth erosion due to the natural fluoride levels as well as a range of other preventable diseases and ailments due to malnutrition and the lack of education, medical care and supplies and emergency transportation. The area and community find it almost impossible to retain teachers & medical staff due to the isolation and lack of food and clean water.
Our aims are to:
1. Assist with immediate basic health and nutritional improvements via:
2. The funding & construction of a rainwater conservation system (guttering and 2-4 large cement tanks) attached to the current Makat community school building to provide safe drinking and cooking water for the children and pregnant women of the community.
3. The funding & construction of an addition three room Government Standard classroom building (2 classes + 1 Food Storage Room)
1. The additional classroom structure will also provide more roof surface area for additional guttering and additional water tanks
2. The Food Storage will ensure World Food Programme continues to provide basic maize on a quarterly basis. This is currently irregular and in imminent danger of withdrawal due to lack of appropriate food storage facilities
4. Fund & Take part in Buccolosis testing on the Makat Communities cattle to provide essential medical data. Buccolosis is often misdiagnosed as malaria
5. Fund & Take part in STD drama workshops to the community under supervision of Dr Penny Aberhardt and the District Medical Officer
6. Subject to funds: aim to install 1 x solar panel at the Merogoi Outreach Clinic (1 day's walk) to incentivise Doctors to stay at the Outpost (reduce's isolation) so that there is some basic medical facility 'locally'. For similar reasons, we would like to install one panel at the Teacher's Accommodation Unit at the Makat School.
DONATIONS:
To realise these very ambitious target, I need to raise a MINIMUM of £3,500.00. As a sign of my own commitment, I will be attempting to summit Mount Meru as part of my fundraising activities. Known as KIllimanajaro's 'little sister' but in no way less demanding, Mount Meru stands at almost 4,600 metres above sea level. Our group will be trying to scale it in 2 nights & 3 days, less than half the time for a Killimanjaro summit attempt but not half the height! PLEASE NOTE! I have paid for all costs related to the Mountain climb myself so that your donations will be covering the funding of the materials, transportation and specialist skills associated with the projects detailed above.
A proportion of the funds raised will cover my travel and basic camping costs in the community to physically oversee the funding, use my skills to take part in all elements of the construction, set-up and implement educational services and, finally, ensure the projects are completed prior to leaving. These projects will be wholy owned by the Challenge Worldwide 2012 Group to Africa. These communities currently receive no funding from other sources and will only receive the help they need if you help me to raise £3,500.00.

Don't agree with other people paying to fund the trip.
What's the benefit of doing that over sending all the money to people who are already over there?

This money is spent on building materials for me and the other apprentices to actually do the work ourselves... the only thing other than that it funds is flights and camping costs... I have paid £500 personally for the prvillidge already

I was thinking about doing this.. Had an application ready, but couldn't commit to it around that time of year.
Lad in my office is in on it though.

Its a huge amount, what I dont raise I will pay myself tbh
Its for a good cause, not usually my thing but want to bring my daughter up to help people and do the right thing so best start myself
