As above. What does it cost roughly per meter to cover? How thick does it need to be layed? What base needs laying under it? Any tips on laying it?

12 square meters per ton is the average at 50 mm thats deep enough so it lasts and not brake up like a gypo job a ton of tar is around 80/100 pound

Area need to be pretty damn clean of debree before laying it. You need to plan it pretty well if your laying yourself especially if it's off the back of a flatbed. Need to keep it hot, Hire a wacker plate or roller depending on the size of the area you need to lay. When wacking witha plate you need to sprinkle water in front of your path and it helps with the settling of the material. There is shit loads to know really.

What does it need to be laid on ? Hardcore was laid down years ago but it's now muddy . Going to try scrape top off back to hardcore with digger . can it be laid over dirt? I have a roller and whacker so that's no problem .

You are best off laying it over a solid base. We use to put a thin concrete base down. I guess some tightly wacked hardcore won't be bad but it leaves it open to movement underneath, which will cause cracks etc which could be a bad move. You could put a layer or dolly above the hardcore or even some small stone and wack/roller it down? Up to you really but make sure you have a solid base to lay it on as it won't last long.

It really not something you want to be attempting yourself without any prior experience however from what I understand of your comments you would need to uplift the existing tarmac, consolidate the existing hardcore with a whacker plate, lay a 50mm base course and 25mm wearing course both being rolled.

If you wanted to take and consolidate yourself you would be looking at about £25-£30/m2 for the reinstatement.
