What are the dsg gearboxes like on te Audi a3's, can you still change the gears up and down on the gear stick ? Do they have more problems than the manual?

Yes you can. Knock the leaver left in D then push the stick forwards or backwards to change manually, or use the paddles if fitted.

More to go wrong in them than a manual.
Think the mechatronic failure is the expensive one from what I can remember. But there is a specialist or two that can rebuild if need be much cheaper than going to stealers.
Wouldn't let it put you off though just check it over properly before you buy.
DSG on dad's GTI and mates r32 is lovely, can hardly tell they're changing gear when in auto mode.

gearbox is lovely, in auto you can hardly tell its changing, in manual you can tell a bit more (may be just mentally due to the fact you know its changing).
as said mechtronics are some times an issue and are is an expensive fix but quite rare (if it jerks in reverse then its a sign that its on its way out so iv read).
iv had mine coming up to a year now and i still love it (have the odd few things i dont like about it but they good certainly outweights the bad).
manual isnt truely manual either as it still wont let you redline it or the revs drop too low and it will change for you at both ends of the rev range.
also toque is limited in them but can be mapped to handle more also getting it mapped means manual is fully manual, gear changes are even quicker (and they are friggin quick before)
