All evening I've been sorting out my back garden. When I moved in it had a few tonnes of soil in the back corner and was weed paradise.

Now I've sown my own grass, it looks nice, got rid of soil pile, all is good.

I don't want to grow veg in the natural earth because we live very close to the sea and I don't want it being tainted by pests / natural soil acidities or whatever can go wrong.

I was thinking about getting some of those...trough looking things that you can secure above the ground at waist-height, dumping a load of compost in and growing a variety of veg, such as potatoes and carrots.

Has anybody done this? What precautions do I need to take, such as preventing bugs eating my veg and such? Also will my local Boyes have the right kind of compost needed to start growing veg? Want it all done properly, I'm quite excited! Thanks to anyone with advice/experience stories!

my parents do it, they used an old bathtub full of compost from wilkinsons, my dad made a frame and boxed the bath in and painted the top so it looks less like a bath and now its full of stuff growing

Sounds really bizarre but tbh if I had a spare bathtub in the back garden, it's a very useful thing to do with it!
