Found this old gem at my mum's yesterday.

It was bought by my great grandfather some time, according to the serial number, in early 1915.

Still works, even though it does need winding up every couple of hours.

Thought it was pretty cool. Desperately needs a new front glass though, or at least a thorough polish.

I wouldn't do anything yourself. A lot of collectors prefer original condition.

Front glass is acrylic which, from what I can gather, was commonly used to replace the original glass, when broken. So I'm sure it's not original either way and as I don't have any intention of selling it (not worth much anyway) I just want it looking good.

I did some research and found that back then, watches were delivered to the jeweler in pieces and the customer then picked his own combination of clockwork, facia, hands and case. So this watch is made to my great grandfathers taste (and budget).

I'm awaiting all the watch portfolio people to tell you what your Great Grandfather "should" have bought instead!!!!

I'm not into watch much but thats awesome having a family watch thats so old.

I'd get it to a specialist to have it serviced etc.

Because there's a lot of them. Not exactly hard to find and there's not exactly a big demand.

Some are more special than others, I've no idea what ones but in general it's as Balling says.
