Is it necessary? Bmw recommend changing it every 2 years.
Cars going in for a service saturday so thought i'd get the brake fluid changed while it's there.
But, a few blokes in work said its a waste of 50 quid.

Audi suggest the same, can't say I've ever changed mine though, although part of that is they are meant to be a pain to bleed and it's handy to have Vagcom, which I don't.

Every 2 years.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, absorbs water and reduces the boiling point over time.

Can never be a bad thing TBH, just like changing oil religiously. If you afford it along with the cost of the service go for it.

that's what i said to my mate, but you just can't appease some people.
for the sake of 50 quid, it's worth it for peace of mind to me i think.

when i worked for a main dealer (not naming names) , all we did was suck out the brake fluid from the resiviour and top it up again , took seconds to do ( we never got the allocated time to properly bleed the system ) , its worth getting it done but if its costing £50 you may want to somehow make sure that they are doing it properly. rather then massively profiting on the parts and labour

Worth doing. I do mine at least once yearly, but my car gets harder use. £50 over 2 years is nothing.

definatly worth doing, if its done properly but if they just suck it out of resivoir then a waste of time. only takes a few minuites to do it properly and the tools arnt that expensive. 2 / 4 years or 40k miles.

The fluid in mine will just bee off the shelf generic stuff.
Bloody workmates worrying me again, telling me they will suck most of the fluid out the top and just chuck some new stuff in, rather than bleeding it all through properly.
I'm sure it'll be fine, it's not a main dealer, just a bmw specialist indepedent garage.

Go for it, there should be a seperate page in your service history booklet for brake fluid changes

Paint a line over the bleed nipples onto the caliper you'll know if they've bled them as the painted line will be cracked

Tell them you're getting brake fade so want the fluid changing, they will be more inclined to do it properly then.

It will still line up surely as your only opening the nipple a 1/4 turn or so.
