I've had an interest in firearms for a while, and while i was on holiday last week, they ran rifle shooting competitions. It wasn't anything special, just a 22 pellet rifle with a target 20 or so yards away. Anyway, i won the two competitions which i entered, and it's got me thinking that i'd like to do something like this now that i'm home...given that i'm obviously a gifted sniper

I'll of course be looking for answers to these questions outside of CS, however, i thought i'd ask here anyway.

Are there any specific laws which govern the purchase, storage and use of 22 pellet guns/rifles?

Do i need a license to own a 22 pellet rifle?

If i'm given the permission of a/the land owner, am i lawfully allowed to shoot the said gun on the said land?

and finally, what is the next level up from this level of rifle?

There's a fishing tackle shop not too far away from where i live, and the shop window has an array of guns on show. Perhaps i'll nip in for a look and a chat. I just know i'll come out having spent a fortune on stuff which i have no idea about

From what I know (this could be wrong):

  • You need a standard license to purchase the 22
  • You then obviously need a license to use it
  • You need a fireproof, multi-bolt safe to house said weapon
  • Landowner must be notified of use of the weapon
  • null

Also, in case your interested, it's not illegal to buy a silencer, but it is illegal to use it.

I have a spring 22 rifle somewhere, used to do field target shooting as a teenager.

If i remember right, up to 12 ft/lbs power requires no licence.

After spring rifles, the next step is pneumatic but I prefer the feel and response of a good old break barrel .

I can't remember any rules tbh, I went to a registered club on a Sunday and other than that just shot coke cans off of the goalposts in the school field behind my house

yeah, it was snap/break barrel guns which we used on holiday. Simple target shooting is all i'm interested in to begin with tbh. Cheers for the info

Used to do .22 rifle shooting. Proper bullets though, not pellets.

Was awesome.

This however doesn't help your thread I'm afraid.

I'd like to go back to USA and go on some ranges, shoot some larger caliber guns

Wrong on every point .

You don't need any license to own an air rifle but need permission to shoot it on someone's land.
Shotguns and firearms are a different matter.

I was judging from the Irish laws which I thought would be similar, but seemingly not! They're a cunt for their laws over here!

air rifle, break barrel, compressed gas chamber (charge with foot pump) or cylinder (last 300 or so shots) require no licence if under certain "power"

0.177 and 0.22 readdily available over the counter (not online!) with valid ID card (passport, drivers licence) for records

can be kept under your bed or behind the sofa, no specialstorage instructions required

the next level up would be a 0.22 bullet fire rifle, to be fired for hunting or on a range, rather than knocking coke cans off a fence as it would be over kill with its 1mile range!!
this shooting could be done through a local rifle club using their rifles you'd pay membership. buying your own would require a licence and secure storage (multi-lock arms chest) for weapon and ammo and is best kept with a local club unless you wish to purchase such a chest and have it secured to the room/floor/building

Building on what fonz said; no license required if the airgun is under 12ft/lbs. over that you'll need a firearms cert.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

I've got a few air rifles and pistols. Always seems a good idea at the time to buy them then they just sit gathering dust.
