If you were to build a site pretty much the same as www.myhammer.co.uk what would be the cost to that?

Really depends who you go to; certainly an agency will rip you a new one. But if you went with an independent then a rough guestimate would be around the £10k range. Ship it off to India and it could be done for half if not less but you're likely to be greeted with arseaches and headaches.

Just wondering if you could build something within BuddyPress?

On the surface it's a pretty simple concept to put together in Symfony or pure PHP, but once you get into it there's probably a load of work which needs doing.

You might struggle to get all of the functionality with BuddyPress; saying that, i've never really looked into in great detail.

Ed - Have you done any work with BuddyPress?

Naw, never had the need to. Same API's as WordPress though, with added goodness (seeing as it's just a WordPress plugin).

Wordpress you can do that with a very simple script, very simple!

I'd be impressed if you could do a myhammer.co.uk clone using Wordpress; i would have thought it'd take more peeing around that creating the site from scratch.
Although there's a good chance myhammer.co.uk is built on top of a CMS and some of the source-code looks very Joomla-esque. Still not a 5minute job though.

Simple script

It's gonna be built using some kind of enterprise level CMS or framework - not something you could do with WordPress on it's own! For starters WordPress doesn't handle user logins in a useful way for this sort of site.

I'll build you a clone of that site in .net for £5k.

Actually I'd do it cheaper than that if you were serious - it's not a complicated site, just a database back end, few asp.net pages.

The real hard bit is turning it into a profitable business / marketing it / getting people to use it... and I would not be responsible for that

I reckon you could knock together most of the functionality for that site in 2 weeks.

There's nothing complicated there. It's just a big relational database with a web front end

If people are paying £10k for sites like that then I'm in the wrong job.

That was my point, you could lash together some relationships in a few minutes. Getting it all featured and looking that nice is another story.

As a guess, job table with some relationships to classify the job and give it an owner, junction in there so traders can associate themselves with multiple jobs, probably some sort of messaging system, the ERD shouldn't be too complex. But that really isn't the full story. That site as it stands I would also value in the region of a good few grand.

Technically it's straight forward but i wouldn't say it was easy.

Plus unless you happen to be handy at UI/front end then a decent designer is going to eat a reasonable amount of £10k guesstimate.

Edit: Conmar down, but script still available from usual places.

Nice base to have a play around with maybe?

I know the guy (well, company owner) who did Madbid.com... £300k they charged them!

They certainly make more money than myhammer, would need a SHIT LOAD of cash to start but american versions have never taken off.

Where do they make the money? I've posted a few jobs but never taken people up on it. Do they take a cut of quotes?

Or are they all basing it off selling peoples details?

No idea

I'm guessing a cut of the quotes. It just seems like a strong business model. But then I think that of most online businesses with a solid user base. Almost zero outgoings, user-driven content, easy peasy.

Most agencies charge £100+ p/h, so it sounds about right when you also factor in misc fees agencies like to charge.

I'm not sure you could design and develop a site like that in 80 hours, more like 240 hours. And a decent developer or designer is usually £35/40+ p/h, so £10k sounds about right.
