Just because you spend 50quid dnt mean it'll be a really good drink. I spend around 30quid on something I know I like but last time I spent that on a new one is was an aberlour and didn't do much for me.
Maybe email one of these specilist sites and tell them what he normally drinks and see if they can suggest something

Really depends on what he likes, island malts are mostly quite peaty but can be nice with a beer, I prefer more speyside malts myself, for under £50 I would get a bottle glenlivet 18 year old or a 16 year old nadurra

Don't buy a Japenese whisky FFS, there is a reason they spend thousands importing it from Scotland. Scotland makes the best whisky as we have the best drunks. End.

Totally agree.
I'm quite a big scotch drinker and there are some from certain areas I won't touch like speyside and Highland stuff. I really don't like them.
Each has their own specific taste and I suspect most scotch drinkers (excluding people who drink bells and grouse) have a specific taste they prefer to drink.
I would be finding out exactly what area scotch he prefers to drink and go from there.

Buy him a distillery tour. Always good fun and usually lots of samples
I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.
