I'd say Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond, the full near 14 minute long version. From start, to middle and to end it's so different but the changes are absolutely seamless. Phenomenal song

Impossible ...for a start what I consider to be the Best songs ever made might not actually be my personal favourite
For an all rounder - lets say
Joy Division
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHYOXyy1ToI
Im almost sure the best song ever(ella ella) is not by Rihanna though

Hotel california for me. Its just so complete. doesnt need another note in it anywhere
Oasis wernt just about the music. Its was about the clothes and the hair and the drugs and everything that was good about the 90s. wish I was old enough then to take part. live forever and dont look back in anger are my two favorite songs ever. but they arnt the best songs ever

Some of the ones that sprang to mind immediately have already been covered.
But i'd have to say from a not particularly personal point, but as far as craft & construction and from a ticking the right sort of boxes standpoint, i'd say...
'Music' by John Miles,
'Easter' by Marillion,
'American Pie' by Don McLean,
'Hey Jude' by The Beatles,
'You can't always get what you want' by the Stones,
'Life on Mars' by David Bowie,
'Simple Man' by Skynrd,
'The Universal' by Blur,
'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Simon & Garfunkel,
'Can't you see' by The Marshall Tucker Band,
'Won't get fooled again' by The Who,
'Crossroads' by Cream,
'Whiter Shade of pale' by Procol Harum,
'Baker Street' by Gerry Rafferty,
'Comfortably Numb' by Pink Floyd,
And any number of tracks by ELO, would all certainly fit the criteria and are decent candidates.
Plus Abba are always quoted as having perfect arrangements and being immensely complex and intricate works of the musician's and singer's craft for what is essentially just pop music.
There's also a whole plethora of Motown, soul, Rhythm & Blues, folk etc etc etc that I haven't even touched on, so a REALLY difficult one this.
I personally have quite a lot of music and would really struggle to pick even my favourite top ten songs though, so I def could never choose a greatest song of all time from a technical, historical or even personal basis.
Good question though and an interesting thread.
