I changed the oil on my xe on Saturday and everyone kept saying to use 10w40, how ever I had previously been topping up with 15w-40 as I was told this would be best for a old engine. After changing the oil the engine is very tappy from cold and you can hear a faint tapping when warm ( didn't do this before ). So should I drain it out and go for 15w-40 instead as this was fine before? Thanks in advance.

Hmm because it always tapped a little for about 30 secs on cold before with 15-40. But with the 10-40 it taps for around 5mins cold.

Might just be that the engine is getting on a bit. I remember when I bought my GTE 16v (20xe) it wasn't too bad, but after about 6 months of driving it hardly stopped ticking at all. Had 144k on it mind you and had had a hard life. Oil stabilizer was recommended to me but it didn't work.

10w/40 is the oil to use. My cav gsi used to tap its heart out for the first few mins of cold driving...but it stopped after a bit. Might be an idea to get the lifters replaced tbh bud.

You need to change the viscosity of your oil as your engine wears too, the tolerances will widen as the engine ages.
