Have to remember how many hours they do mostly 6/7 days a week for that 45k. Lads of the stations get around that as did a few months labouring for them years ago.

In the last two months I have had to sack 11 staff, all for various reasons. Most of the time I don't have a problem with it because they have either had too many warnings or, have clearly been in the wrong knowing full well what they have done, sometimes I feel a bit mean, had a couple of criers recently

You get that bolting bits onto cars round here, while the engineers that design the things get paid about £10k less. Guess who's got a unionised workforce and who hasn't...

Scaffolding supervisor who doesn't know what 'founds' means, you should give yourself the sack

As much as I laughed at that in his defence a scaffy doesn't dig founds they erect things (like other mens penises)

Thanks mate, our logo for our company is "your erection in safe hands" lol

not really and remember most scaffolders are self employed so have to pay for vehicles, running costs, parking fines, etc. out of their own pocket.

Say the scaffy is 25, works for 25 years at 45,000 pa.
Puts 1k away per month for 25 years which is £600k

I could retire at £600k at 50.

I love these posts.

Putting away a grand a month is good going if you had a mortgage to pay and a life to lead.

What if he mortgage hadn't been paid by the time you were 50.

Self employed people also won't be consistently making that.

A lot of what if's and a lot of no basis in reality.

Firstly, i'd say your maths appears to be wrong unless the scaffolder has already managed to save £300k by 25.

Secondly as John pointed out, it won't work out that you'd be able to save that amount every month because you know, reality and real-life.

Thirdly, i doubt there's many 25 year old scaffolders earning £45k pa, rather i suspect it's the older folk.

And lastly £45k pa isn't out of reach for the majority of people, so if what you're saying is possible then why isn't there more 50 year old's retiring?

I can't afford to save £1000 a month, I got a mortgage to pay, 3 of my own kids and saving for a wedding, Disneyland at Xmas...

And about the retiring at 50 I've been doing thi for the last 12 years and I know 3 scaffolders on the tools that older than 50.. They usually do yard work when your near that age as its too hard work

Tbf if you start in scafolding when you leave school you would be on that kind of money by 25. But yes i dont think people realised the difference in the work. i work as a labourer at £70 a day and thats a low wage really. but work isn't 5 days a week 52 weeks a year. weather can give you major down time. also you do wear you self out and scaffolding in hard craft 100%. i know so many people at the 50mark with replaced hips/knees and nackered joints. If you want a trade go for plumber. they are about £220-£250 an hour :O at least round my way they are.
