Will anyone be using it?

I can't see it being that popular. Surely people would still use Whatsapp as the default cross platform message tool?

Whatsapp/PingChat took that spot a few years back so i'm not sure what the point was releasing BBM for Android/iOS, other than making it easier for current BB users to jump ship to different platforms.

Blackberry should stop dicking around with the consumer market and continue with what they're good at - enterprise/businesses.

I thought texting and email were the preferred cross platform messaging tools!?

If you're poor and have a pay and go phone thus having to pay for text messages then whatsapp is a good tool.

I only use it for MMS as 3 charge me for them. Cunts.

"It’s immediate. BBM is always on so you are always connected. And because messages on BBM are typically delivered and read within seconds, it’s the closest thing to a live conversation"

that would be like texting then...

I guess the data charge will be cheaper than a text anyway, so I can see that making sense. Still, you could send an email and not worry about the other person having the correct app to read it.

How do you keep track of which contacts use which messaging apps? Seems a bit of nuisance to switch between apps depending on what the recipient uses...

I could very very nearly move to a data only sim. Whatsapp is my number one, go to communication method for 90% of the people I contact, closely followed by iMessage.

If it wasn't for the very rare occasion I do actually need to call someone (who's not got an iPhone since theres facetime voice calls), and I'm not at home, it would be doable.

Does BBM still use Blackberry's NOC network? If so, then security is an added bonus; but there are far better encrypted messengers/forms of comms if that's your issue anyway.

Can you do that? I thought Whatsapp required a telephone number for authentication?

Could just use a VOIP service to call normal numbers if you wanted to go data only.

Yeah Dom, there would be little things like that which make it nearly possible but not quite. I don't think it will be long though.

John, don't even know what VOIP is tbf, Skype?

You probably can 'hack' Whatsapp to get it to install on a tablet etc but i can't see them changing the core authentication away from telephone numbers - for tablets, they'll probably add an option to bind it to your mobile/mobile number so it'll work similar to iMessenger.

VOIP is Voice Over IP; Skype/Viber or any SIP (VOIP protocol) provider - usually costs to terminate to PSTN (landlines/mobile) numbers though.

looks like they've pulled the plug on the release for now, sounds like there servers are not up to scratch for the demand.

Probably the best bad decision

Blackberry should form a partnership with Apple. Would kill the competition.

I've said it recently anyway but Blackberry doesn't have long left. Focusing on enterprise or not. Going the way of Nokia.

Data sim will be assigned a phone number, every sim will have a number

Never knew that. Can you still receive calls/SMS's on a data sim then?

Blackberry will likely get sold and broken up; hopefully someone will keep the phone side of it going as their recent phones and OS are pretty decent; just a bit too late to the market (plus the stupid change of going for consumers).

Obviously the Nokia name in phones won't be around forever but i can't see Microsoft giving up on the phone market any time soon.

It depends Dom txt I think 100% yes but they have the ability to bar/switch off the call aspect. It's been a while since I worked in the shop so it may be different now, but 100% all sims carry a number even if they are only used as data for a dongle/tablet etc.

That would be ideal only atm there are no data only sims that are better value than normal ones with data included.

They temporarily removed it from Android's Play store; i believe it should be on the Apple Appstore though.

Nah they took it off there too, what a utter farce, typical of blackberry. No wonder they're going down the shitter.

Blackberry has been officially bought out by Fairfax who already had part share of the company.

Will be interesting to see what happens next.
