Long, though interesting read.

What makes me suspicious, is that these things always seem to happen to people who make money from security software.

Sounds like it's all made up.

Best one about just now is the one that encrypts your files.

Unless someone has got the decryption key since I looked at one a couple of weeks ago, it's either pay up or lose your data

Or restore it from one of your backups. Everyone has two or three backups of their data, right?

Obviously you can create an audible network between infected systems but you're not infecting anything just by playing sound at it
Sounds like the security researcher was infecting his 'airgap' system(s) by using infected devices

Definitely. Just. A proof of concept and one that's not of much use in the real world anyway.
