I wondered if this is possible on a home telephone?

I have started a new home based job and they want me to get a new phone line, line rental and broadband.

Already paying me £100 so I was wondering if I could possibly have another phone number of the line rental etc I already have with Sky broadband?!

Any help would be sound

They'll probably be able to do it on a business line but you'd obviously need to stump up for it.
Otherwise VOIP is about your only other option - if you just need an inward-bound line then Sipgate offers free UK numbers (outward pricing isn't too bad otherwise).

VOIP is your only option tbh, could use SIPgate or 3C for a free incoming line then use your mobile for it?

I think the voip will suit me better as I can install skype app onto the work mobile phone and receive calls on my "landline" number when im shopping in asda

We have VOIP in the office, it is fucking horrendous.

Might not be as complicated/shit for your application though.

Hi Dom cheers for info. Just gone for the 12 months Skype new phone number (starting 0151 area code for Liverpool)

and have tested it by installing Skype app on iphone....calling my new landline number from another phone and it rings my laptop and mobile!! Well impressed!

Can always tell when you are speaking to someone on a VOIP line btw, no matter how well it's set up. ISDN is still better.

Yip, broadband is nowhere near sufficient to cope with the level of traffic and no one checked/asked that prior to install.

The system we have is supposedly high end Panasonic, in practice it is not fit for purpose and should never have been installed in the first place.

The old school phone people I deal with don't normally have a clue about VOIP at all. They can maybe add the trunk to their 1998 Panasonic but that's about it. Normally not willing to learn anything about it either, completely happy in their ignorance.

They've had PSTN calling for a while, just that it tends to be expensive compared to VOIP providers although the flip-side is Skype being a piece of piss to install/setup.
