Some people wanting to start one up, they provide the garage and tools and you go there and work on your own car.

I think it sounds great, bit of a social scene to working on stuff. But I can't see people paying for it.

I always wondered why this wasn't a thing.

I reckon it will work but the cost will be the deciding factor. Would have to be low otherwise your better off paying a garage to do it

Sounds a bit ambitious as well, they're offering a dyno for a start, that's a full time business in itself, never mind the odd bit of usage at £20 a go.

Would need loads of people on it all the time.

I've seen one advertised in Manchester on gumtree. It's £60p/h.

That's a rip for doing it yourself. £60ph is well enough to pay someone to do it.

If you love working on it yourself maybe, but you'd have to be nuts.

it would have to be £15p/h for it to work really.

otherwise you;d be better off either buying your own tools or paying a garage to do it

Would they need insurance for letting randomers loose with tools?

They covered these type places on fifth gear a year or two back.

Good idea, I'd certainly take advantage of one.

First time I watched Stephen king's christine i thought how great it would be to have access to cheap garage space i could use when i needed it with acces to air and engine hoists etc but i think its crazy supplying tools as surely a heck of a lot are going to get stolen by pikeys?

People cutting their arms off with angle
Grinders and dropping cars off ramps onto their mates as well. Bet the liability insurance will be stupendously expensive

Was 1 around here too and it didn't stay open for long. Had the basic fee for hiring the garage space, or you could pay more for a ramp or loan of the tools. Wasn't that expensive, was massive, fully supervised etc but never lasted.

Good idea, I have a gravel drive and no garage so would love a place like this.

I think tools should be charged extra tbh. Liability is going to be massive I think too.

Liability thing and there's not that much you actually need a ramp for. Obviously makes it easier but not required.

What they are proposing will never happen or last longer than a few months.

Far too much there to make it cost effective

They're quite common over here as many people have nowhere to work on their cars. You can rent just the ramp, or all manner of tools and equipment. There's a charge and security deposit for everything you borrow. The biggest one in Munich's been going since 1975, has a couple of dozen lifts, spray booth and beer garden.

Regarding insurance, I think you have to sign some kind of disclaimer. Plus most people over here have individual liability insurance, so if they set someone on fire with a welding torch then it comes out of their policy not the workshop's.
