For road/trail/occasion hill use, is it worth paying extra for a 29" wheeled bike or saving the £150 and sticking with 26"? Will I really notice a difference between the two?

You will notice the difference. Especially if you will mainly use it on the road. Bigger wheels roll faster so take less effort (depending on tyres)

What you looking at that costs £150 more?

The what car thread suggests you are tall so therefore 29
650b is for enduro and people that are too short for 29ers

Drives supercharged Tec with torque

It's simple Nick, 650b is the way forward for general riding, 26 for downhill and 29 for racing/enduro.
I would have thought your pro mates would have pointed this out to you.

But yes in all seriousness 26 will end up being just downhill stuff, 650b will be the common selling/regular bikes and 29 for racing. Potentially 26 and 29 becoming a rare sight.

Rode a 27.5 Giant at the weekend. 29 felt heavy and cumbersome in comparison.
