Anyone have any info on towing laws ?

I passed my test 10 years ago and hearing mixed comments on wether or not I can tow on my licence.

We will be using a lwb Nissan interstar to tow the saxo around.

Could we use an A frame instead of a trailer ?

Any help would be great.

Unladen vehicle plus loaded trailer cannot be more than 3.5t. As far as I'm aware.

Max towing weight of the vehicle must be greater than the max gross weight of the trailer, combined they need to be less than 3.5T

Ie max towing weight of 2t for the van, trailer MGW of 1.5T, combined is 3.5T so is ok. A trailer suitable for such duties aren't that common though

Saxo should only weigh 850 ish at a guess ?

Just trying to think of ways of getting to and from track days, seems silly to mot/tax/insure for such little use

Saxo may only weigh 850 but its the weight the trailer allows (as stamped on the plate)

Your issue is using the van to tow it,

From a quick google,

Your vans Maximum weight is 3500kg,
Which means you can only tow a 750kg trailer taking you too 4.25t legally on your liesence.

Van is too heavy - 3500kg maximum authorised mass. Therefore you can't legally put any trailer braked trailer on it unless you have +E, which you don't.

You need a lighter tow car, such that the MAM of the car + the trailer remains under 3500kg.

(and that the car is heavier than the trailer but that is more likely to be the case).

Not with the van for the above reason, and not unless it activates the brakes on the Saxo.

Unless you can get the Saxo under 750kg, in which case it doesn't need brakes. But you still can't use the van.
