Production platforms / oil rigs have them. We have 2 x V16 CAT's for emergency power and 2 x CAT's which drive an alternator to power 2 fire pumps if we lose all power

Yea, offshore work is like the bulk of our work. We do a lot of engine overhauls for generators in the north sea.

Beryl Alpha. Who do you work for? All 4 of ours have just been overhauled in the past 18 months. Some just a top end, new heads etc and one of them had a crank sent ashore for some work

I dont get involved in much of the testing as i work in ICA (control systems etc), however i know we do a monthly maintenance run. Which fires up all 3 generators and runs them off load. Our HV engineer usually does an on load test on one generator each month. Checking the same things as alan said above.
We currently have a support contract with broadcrown for the engines themselfs. However these engines are only 2 years old. Eventually our own maintenance electricians and fitters will look after them like our old engines.

Co op I worked at had a stinking diesel generator to power it.
Massively noisy when it got going!

They are always noisy. They run at 1500/1800rpm straight from being switched on. That's why most have heated cooling circuits when switched off, so that the moment it fires, its actually up to temp and not from cold/
