I'm trying to help a friend out with their laptop. They contacted and said their laptop won't boot up but does start up, so I thought a chkdsk might sort the issue.
However I got my hands on it tonight and it powers on for about 5 seconds, then dies. It shows nothing on the screen and there isn't even power on long enough to open the DVD tray.
The fan does spin up, so not sure it is that. Any other ideas? You literally power on and it stays on for 5 seconds tops, then dies. Shows nothing on the screen.
I've taken the battery out and am going to leave it for ages to see if that helps reset it, but other than that no ideas really?!

I'd be tempted to take the cover off and check the fan exhaust isn't clogged with dust. Also try replacing the little cell battery on the mother board.

I just tried takjng the back off. Took every scrw out and there didn't seem to be any movement. Plus the back is moulded, as if you have to take the keyboard off.
Only managed to get two little covers off to expose the HDD and ram.
Model is Compaq Presario CQ57

Ram out and see of it does anything different, if it doesn't, it'll be motherboard.

Oddly, i put it back together and left it. Kept going through boot sequence, then i saw something on the screen. Kept hitting escape and F11, got it back to Windows.
Bloody weird. Seems stable enough but going run a chkdsk.

I once tore a laptop to pieces because the bloody thing was doing the same, swapped everything out, still the same. Plugged a different power cable in by accident and the bloody thing stayed on! New charger and it was right as rain!

The very strange thing is, I've just tried turning the laptop on (I did Shut Down last night) and it is doing the same thing again.
Battery is charged as per what Windows was telling me last night once I managed to get it booted and logged in. Does the same thing on battery or power, so don't think it is that.
Trying RAM removal and battery out again for a bit to see if I can get logged in to at least grab pictures and stuff needed.

Sounds like mobo needs reflowing / reballing. Common as shit fault on laptops - and looking on google for that model it's prone to the same behaviour

Hmmm ok, in English?
Resorted to taking the HDD out, grabbing everything off it required (only really pictures from a phone back-up) and then plugging the HDD back in.
Still not working, but got stuff off.
