I know nothing about all this lark and during a recent discussion with a pal came to a bit of an impasse.

So, my question is, if you have a saloon with a 'sealed' boot enclosure, i.e. no ski hatch or folding seat, what type of sub should you use, a ported box or not?

And would this alter if you were to cut a port into the parcel shelf?

Thanks all.

I would think a sealed box due it giving off more bass.

Regardless of what style of car, I would always go sealed. Ported boxes never sound as bassy as sealed.

Ported for SPL sealed for more precise sound isn't it?

Sealed give a wider range of frequencies than ported but ported are louder than sealed near the tune frequency. I currently have a ported box in my car and it's more than enough to flex the windscreen... Sealed wouldn't be anywhere near as good

I've got an astra h, but the theory applies to the same either way... A ported box will be louder but only at a smaller frequency range than sealed

I bought a 15" Kicker L7 which was in a ported box and it sounded shite. No kick to it on bassy songs. Didn't have a clue why so stuffed an old towel in the ported hole and it nearly blew the boot off. Ended up screwing a bit wood over the hole and it was insanely loud after that.

Depends on the size of the box, port and wadding in the box.

I had 2 of them in my corsa, in a very large, correctly ported box tuned to around 45hz (cant remember exactly, it was 10years ago!). Only being run on half the power they were able to handle and still recorded 148db.

I changed them into a box 1/4 of the size with no port and was hitting 144db but with much more punch on speedy dance tracks. The low rolling bass of rap music wasn't anywhere near as loud.

Given all the choices of all the set ups I had, my two 12" Inifinty Perfect 12's (rated at 300rms) in a 4cubic foot ported box with 1200RMS going up them (600 each) was the best set up I ever had.

There is nothing more irritating than some inconsiderate prick sharing his shit music with the rest of the traffic.

Not everyone wants a subwoofer for noise levels though, I personally use one for sound quality, Pink Floyd never sounded better
