bout £300 as the engin block will need skimming as well, might as well change the timing belt as well as the engin will be in pieces

Block will need skimming? Unlikely. If so its an engine out and apart job which will cost much more than £300.

For a simple head gasket change and head skim your looking at about £150 labour, £70 parts (inc cam belt) £30 head skim.

miles, how can you tell how much damage is done? If its blown for quite some time, there could be some major warping going on in the head, the coolant could be full of oil and vice-versa. A head skim might well be the only answer to stop it blowing again so soon.

i always skim heads when head gasket has gone its not worth not doing it for the sake of 20- 30 quid. to check get a metal ruler and put on the head and it should sit flat.
