i only recently had problems with my sub
here's the spec
amp : sony XM-255EX
Sub : 12" X-Plod (this is a match for the amp not sure of model num)
HU : Panasonic Mp3
the AMP is connected via RCA/Pre-out
The Problem is it aint kicking properly i've tried all sorts o things like adjusting gain, frequency, and checked all the wires all the indicator lights are on green on the amp which according to the instructions says its working properly.
it kicks ok at low volume but if my HU is Half way up or more it laggs a bit then F***'s up all together

OK here is a few things that it might be:

Turn the gains on the amp down and turn bass up on the headunit. See if this makes any difference.
I know this sounds silly but is it wires properlt. IE NOT POSITIVE TO NEGATIVE.

I blew my DVC JL Audio 15" W3 D4 (yes everybody its snowy here not AJP )
and when i turned it up from low it sounded like a barking dog. Real nasty. so you might have blown the sub already.

Hope this helped, otherwise go to an ICE shop.

Steve.

Have you used good cabling? if a 500w amp only recieves 200w of power, that 200w will produce decent sound but the other 300w the amp is trying to use will be distortion/clipping/heat.
