Depends on car, size of wheels and suspension.
For example i have 17in wheels on my corsa B with a 205 wide tyre. The wheel offset is et45 which is quite good with minimal lowering and a bit of arch modding. However i have to use a 5mm spacer as i have coilover suspension on the front which catches the bigger wheels. This makes the offset of the front wheels et40, i think. (not good).
What car and wheels do u have/want ?

Spacers to what I understand would make that wheel an et35, which for a corsa is not as good as the et 40, so dont use them. Did the kwik fit man mean spacers or spigot rings, as they are different, spigot rings are designed to fit the wheel to the car basically.

The offset of my car is minus 7 had to have it like that cuz of the arches
Shame though, cuz the hub centric spacers they used are only adaptable to certain wheels so I had to go for the Team Dynamics Monza 17"
