Even after watching video from several angles and seeing what remained of his truck, Geoffrey Bodine doesn't remember much about his fiery, frightening crash at Daytona International Speedway six weeks ago.
"Fortunately, I don't remember anything after the first impact in the wall," Bodine said Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. "I don't remember the tumbling through the air, the fires or anything like that."
During the first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Daytona on Feb. 18, Bodine hit a wall at 190 mph. His truck cartwheeled through the air and by the time it stopped virtually all that remained was the roll cage to which he was strapped.
Another driver and nine spectators were injured, but none as seriously as Bodine, who suffered a broken wrist, ankle and vertebrae, and a concussion.
"I thought II was going to get squeezed into the wall, and just a normal accident type of thing. ... I'm going to get mad, get out, kick a tire and my race is going to be over," he said. "I had no idea that it was going to be as dramatic an accident as it was."
Wearing an upper-body brace to protect his still weakened back and a cast on his right wrist, Bodine made his first public appearance since the wreck. He announced plans to make his Winston Cup return at Los Angeles on April 30.
"I have no apprehension about getting behind the steering wheel, not at all. I survived one of the worst crashes in the history of NASCAR and look at me, a sore wrist and a sore back," said Bodine, 50, who has 18 Winston Cup victories. "If I had a head injury, I'm sure I'd be thinking differently about getting back in and driving again."
