It replaces the Catalytic Converter. It helps your car breathe better aswell. I have one on the Prelude and it made a BIG difference!

Your exhaust system has a catalytic converter in it to reduce harmful gasses.
However the cat is the most restricive part of the exhaust and you are loosing potential horse power because of it.
If you replqace the cat for a straight through pipe you will gain allot of power.
BUT
Your car will most probably fail its MOT because all cars after a certain year have tougher emmission tests and are required to have a cat fitted.

You will need the original CAT come MOT time though...as the car will probably not pass the emissions test without it.

modern exaust systems contain a catalytic converter to reduce emissions.
It is now a legal requirement.
A de-cat pipe simply by-passes (removes) the Catalytic converter and maybe open up a little more power as the cat will restrict exhuast gas flow.
generally exhaust systems without a cat will sound raspy

Is that maybe because people remove the centre section as well?
Why don't older cars without them sound raspy?

My janspeed one aint raspy, its more of a box than a pipe though.
My corsa sounds well deep, pretty unique sound to it with different inlet.
Throttle boddies are just the best sound ever though!

Standard inlet is restrictive and longer.
Gives more power due to increased airflow and sound like your exhaust would if you chopped most of it off!

Why don't older cars without them sound raspy?
listen to an old XR2 or somethin like that, usually sound pretty raspy to me!

mine sounded crap with decat pipe and still had centre section and rear box, but mine was just a straight thru pipe had no baffles of any sort.
i've put cat back on now cos it sounded so bad
